After World War 2, "postwar education reform" in Japan started with self-examination of the incorrect concepts wr itten in school textbooks. The government was harshly criticized for its autocratic control over the contents of textbooks. Under the reform, the government was to only screen textbooks produced by private companies. However, the government is now reinforcine its control over the course of study by severe screening and ado- pting regulation. This paper will discuss the historical importance of the Jap anese course of study, screening system, and adoption system,whi ch regulate the textbooks used in school education. The paper is composed of Introduction, Course of Study, Screening System,The Introduction presents an overview of the Japanese textbook syste m and briefly discusses its problems and the consequences of the reforms.
