碩士 === 東海大學 === 環境科學系 === 84 === This study has analyzed and compared 23 air quality indices used in the United States,Canada,Mainland China, Japan and Taiwan. A New Air Quality Index（NAQI）is proposed ,using an Entropy Function which avoids the potential problems of ambiguity and eclipse.Data on the 5 most important air pollutants were collected from air quality monitoring stations in the Taichung area.Without having precise epidemiology data, the weekly absenteeism rate among school children was tested for its correlation with air pollutants,using NAQI and Pollutant Standards Index（PSI）.Only SO2 level showed significant correlation（P＜0.05） with absenteeism.There was no difference in sigaificance of this correlation using these two indices.Key words：Urban Air Quality，New Air Quality Index（NAQI）， Pollutant Standards Index（PSI），Entropy Function
