Due to the limitation of floor height, the pipe lines are usually passing through the web of beams in steel buildings. However,there is lack of knowledge on the effect of web openings on its seismic resistance characteristics, especially their strength, stiffness, stability and energy dissipation capacity.The reported research work examines the behavior of steel beams with openings on their web under monotonic and cyclic load. Both experimental and analytical works are carried out to study their behavior under different stage of loading. Based on this study, design guidelines are also suggested for this type of applications.
