One is the stator which consists of vibrator and stick-on piezoelectric ceramic; While, the other is the rotor which is forced by a spring to contact with the stator. When the stator is stimutated by the resonant driving power, it will vibrate and bring the rotor to take turns. Bacause USM is driven by friction, their intrinsic features are as follows: (1) stable low-speed and high torque rotation. (2) direct driving, quite high turnoff brake torque. (3) excellent response at low speed. (4) compactness in size. (5) freedom from magnetic influence and applicable in magnetic field. (6) exetremely low acoustic noise in operation. Since the special intrinsic characteristics of the ultrasonic motor (USM) overwhelm the properties of the electromagnetic motor, the former prevails and comes into fashion in some applications. In this study, we designed the driving unit of the travelling wave USM and implemented a servo position system to measure USM's excellent low speed response and precise positioning capability.
