One way to meet the above requirements is to interconnect existing networks with a high speed network as a backbone. Since FR has been widely used in public data networks to interconnect LANs, ATM is a high speed network technology aimed to support any kind of services. To interconnect FR and ATM is thus an important issue. In order to interconnect two heterogeneous networks, an element called interworking unit is required to perform interworking functions to map protocols between FR and ATM. Because frames are variable length in FR and ATM cells are with fixed length of ser data, in IWU, there are two modes of operation: message mode and streaming mode. In message mode, before any protocol processing, all cells of the same frame have to be received. In streaming mode, the protocol processing begins without waiting all cells of the same frame are received. In this paper, we perform a simulation experiment to evaluate performances of the FR/ATM interworking unit on the direction from ATM to FR with message mode and streaming mode. The performances we focus on are the reassembly buffer size, the FR transmission buffer size, the average delay time of a frame experienced in IWU and the loss ratio. According to the ATM and FR protocols, traffic control is an optional function to the end systems. Therefore, we also compared the performances with different traffic algorithms in IWU. B.H.
