Four abattoirs(Tao- yuan, Tai-chung, Pin-tung, Hua-Lein) were selected for studies. At each abattoir, 10 heads were sampled monthly during the period from October 1995 to March 1996. Specimens taken in order included blood, muscles, kidney, liver, heart, lung, pulmonary lymph node, and spleen. Enzymed linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were used to detect anti-viral antibody ands viral RNA respectively. The ELISA antibody positive prevalence rate is 85.4% (205/240) in 240 sera. The highest prevalence rate was from Pin-tung area (93.3%; 54/60), followed in decreasing order by Hua-Lein area (86.7 %; 52/600, Tai-chung area (85 %; 51/60), and Tao-yuan area (76.7 %; 46/60). Eleven out of a total of 140 tested sera were positive ( 7.9%) by RT- PCR. All of the 472 tested organ samples were negative. Our results indicate that most of the slaughter age pigs have been infected by PRRS virus and induced antibody reaction, but the viral residues in carcases are minimal.
