An overview is given, and the prospect is shown from an engineering point of view. ALife is a new wave science, founded in 1987, for the quest of life by recreating "life" phenomena within computer or other "artificial" media. Being interdisciplinary, ALife connects tightly especially with traditional biology, artificial intelligence (AI), and complex science. ALife is often regarded as a branch of complex science, because ALife studies "emergent" phenomena of life in particular and complex science studies those of dynamical systems in general. ALife is distinct from traditional sciences by its special emphases on "bottom-up", "emergence", "self-organization", "self- reproduction", and "open-ended evolution". From these novel concepts, we show that ALife is in prospect of being (1) as a new methodology for artificial intelligence, (2) as an application and an analysis tool for parallel computing, (3) as a model of individual-based systems.
