But we encounter some problems with data-loss or misjudging record while only human eyes and hands are used to observe and record the fast movement of certain insects. Moreover, we cannot see the movement in the darkness condition. Therefore, it would be helpful to have an automatic data acquisition system for monitoring insect activity. The aim of this research is to develop a low-cost, flexible, integrated automatic system as a research tool for monitoring the dynamics of insect activity. The hardware of this system is composed with infra-red sensor, sensor circuit, relay amplifier, signal transit wire and one 8255 computer interface card. When an insect passes the sensor, the infra-red beam emitted by infra-red LED will be interrupted by its body so that the sensor will be triggered and the output signal will be changed. This signal will be justified by an IC, LM-339, and then converted to a single bit digital signal and collected by the 8255 interface card. The data will then be written on a hard disk by a Turbo C-compiled recording program. The sampling rate of this system is 25 records/sec. at a 16MHz 286PC while scanning 48 sensors. The performance of this system is fast enough comparing with the insect moving activity so there is no risk of data-loss. With the modular-base design, it is easy to use and to change the sensitivity by turning the SVR. After implementing this system to study the activities of honey bees colony and German cockroach nymphs, the performance is satisfactory. This system is the first general-purpose system for insect activities recording. It may be commercialized in the future and implemented on other animals activity recording.
