Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 商學系 === 84 === This thesis tries to develop an interactive model of platforms
applications. By investigating the evolution of system
products and the critical issues of architecture, standards and
dominate designs, this thesis suggests that a sustainable
platform needs have such features as high barrier to switching
users'' participative value, complete operation processing core
and comprehensive supportive interfaces, and can provide a
favorable environment in which various applications can be
developed and accumulated. Between platforms and applications
are interactive mechanisms of marketing and technical forces,
which collectively constitute the network effects and the
competition effects. Based on the model, this thesis develops
the following strategies for platforms: 1. Enlarge installed
base and create popularity of it. 2. Introduce proper and
timely architecture standards. 3. Enhance the market position
and reputation. 4. Offend competitors by penetration price and
pre-announcement new versions Because the fast-expanding
Internet is shaping the new infrastructure of information
society, this thesis studies platforms as a focal case. By
analyzing the actions and of worldly major players, in
particular Netscape and Microsoft, this thesis in the final
part tries to depict the loci showing these firm have been
deliberately managing their strategic positioning in the
complex and dynamic multi-layer architecture modern information
technology platforms.
