碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 商學系 === 84 === The survival rates of small and medium firms established in 1981 and 1986 are calculated and compared across manufacturing industries. The amount of the survival firms can be determined by "total" or "number-checking" methods. Due to the characteristics of data applied which is obtained from Directorate-general of Budget, Accounting and Statistics, Executive Yuan, the time interval used in this study is five years. The variation in five-year survival rates across industries is explained as the result of differences in the industry-specific characteristics. The five-year survival rate of new established small and medium firms in 1981 and 1986 are 40.63% and 48.36%, respectively, which shows the survival rates of new small and medium firms in Taiwan are tending upward in 1980s. It is also found in this study that the age and size of firms tends to lower the failure rates of industries which is classified based by the industrial classification standard of Executive Yuan. However, the relationship between the firm size and the likelihood of firm survival apparently vary considerably with firm age, the time considered, and especially categorizing criterion used.
