Most anthropological studies of their religions focused on the religious conversion. In this paper I wish to investigate the contemporary society with the newly-established Christianity. The ethnographical material was collected in Ping-he, an aboriginal village in South Taiwan. First of all, the attention is paid to family religious life, especially to the negotiation between two religious sects, which implies that the Primogeniture is the most important mechanism in its process, that is, Christianity becomes an element of primoge- niture. In addition, equality of the sexes due to the Primogeni- ture is also reflected on the negotiation. Furthurmore, we may interpret the church activities by the characters of family organization. As a central figure in a family, the eldest son (daugter) should lead his family to the church. On the other hand, without the duty of family livelihood, wemen are enthusiastic in churchgoing. Therefore, the primogeni- tural leadership and the sexual dichotomy are two significant elements in the relation between Paiwan family and church. Unlike most researches in religion and society, this work adopts bi-directional argument from one to the other. In this method, we can handle the thesis of family and religion well. In conclusion, the relation between family and church, the inheritance and leadership of primogeniture, as well as the characters of sexual dichotomy and equality are expressed clearly. It means that Christianity has merged with the family institution and influrences the social life of villagers in Ping-he since 1952. Hsieh,Shih-chung 謝世忠 1996 學位論文 ; thesis 109 zh-TW
