The MBI derivatives were syn- thesized by reactant catalyzed by quaternary ammo- nium salt in an alkaline solution of KOH/organic solvent two-phase medium. The products MBI and its derivatives, which are important intermediates of specialty chemicals, are used as inhibitor, anti- oxidant, antiseptic, and adsorbent in industries, and durg for medicine care. The reactions were greatly enhanced by adding a small catalytic amo- unt of tertiary amine or quaternary ammonium salt and/or in the presence of potassium hydroxide. The yields of products MBI and its derivatives are in- creased by employing the present methods in this study. Several rigid results were obtained from the synthesis of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole(MBI) in a ho- mogeneous solution and in a liquid-liquid two-pha se medium, and the derivatives of MBI by phase transfer catalysis was also investigated experi- mentally in detail. Rational kinetic models were built up based on the effects of the operating conditions on the reaction rates. A pseudo-first order rate law model, was simplified from the o- riginal kinetic model, was sufficient to describe the behavior of reaction in a homogeneous solut- ion, in a liquid-liquid two- phase solution and in a gas-liquid reaction solution.
