By taking hole-drilling records from Kaohsiung Rapid TransitBureau, the first purpose of this study is to investigate the distributions of soil layers and shear-wave velocites along the Red and Orange routes of the transit system. Secondly, microtremor measurements were conducted at the hill areas of Kaohsiung district and thestations along the two routes where seismoments were installed. From the formula for estimating thedominant period of soil layers, The results might prove the reliability of microtremor measurements, and might provide information for understanding soil characteristics and dominants periods along the two routes. Finally, the Nakamura's technique and the concept of transfer functions were adopted to design computerprograms for predicting the strong ground motion at specified stations. The actual strong ground motion recored on April 25,1995 were performed for every station along the two routes, which might have valuable motion estimations were performed for every station along the two routes, which might have valuable inputsfor the relative engineering design.
