(l) to understand the values and meanings of newspaper public
opinions on formal education.
(2) to provide an ideological critique of the opinions on
elementary education in order to serve as a reference for
the future educational reforms.
This study applied a documentary analysis approach to explore the values and meanings of newspaper public opinions on formal education. Basically, the content analysis method was applied to generate the structure of public opinions, and the semiological analysis method was applied to deconstuct the ideologies embedded in the public opinions on elementary education.
The conclusions drawn from the study are as follows:
l. The publlc opinions on newspaper reflects the issues of
formal education.
2. The public opinions on newspaper provides a place for public
debates on formal educatlon.
3. The public opinions on formal education are varied due to
various social strata.
4. The publlc opinions on formal educatlon show differences on
concerns and quantity among where letters are from.
5. There is a close relationship between the issues of formal
education and the social environment.
6. The section of letters to the editor on newspaper is a place
where diverse ideologies interact.
7. Diverse opinions are driven by different ideologies.
8. In general, there is a sense of heteronomous morality and
mistrust embedded in opinions on elementary education.
9. Opinions on elementary education show that the traditional
authoritative system of elementary education tends to
collapse gradually.
10. There is a linkage between the rights and attitudes of
elementary school principals, teachers, and parents.
1l. Public opinions on elementary education provides
opportunities for educators and publics to reflect on the
practices of elementary education.
Based on the findings, this study also provides suggestions for the press,publics, educators, and parents, as well as for the future studies.
