碩士 === 國立交通大學 === 科技管理研究所 === 84 === The purpose of this research was to investigate the development trend offingerprint identification technology from the viewpoints of technicalcapabilities, social - economic environments, application areas and marketdemands. Special emphasis was on its applicability towards electronicauthentication. Other than monitoring literature, this research collected 219U.S. patents awarded between 1975 - 1996 to fingerprint identification relatedinnovations. The technological and business competition among those companiesaround the world were derived from analyzing these patents. The patentanalysis revealed the fact that the fingerprint identification technology hasbecome mature, however, the market demand is still at the early stage. Fingerprint identification shall play an essential role with respect toelectronic authentication in the information era. Taiwan''s government and PCindustry should exert a concerted effort to better prepare and position forthe enormous market of integration of fingerprint identification device intothe computing/networking systems.
