Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立交通大學 === 光電工程研究所 === 84 === Liquid crystal based fiber components, exploiting the high birefringence and electrooptic effect of liquid crystals, are versatile. A single-mode fiberenclosed with planar aligned liquid crystals is reported in this thesis. The fiber was etched to approach its core. The output light was affected through the evanescent field coupling between the fiber and the surrounding liquid crystals. To effectively approach the evanescent field, the orientation of liquid crystal and the etched depth of fiber were studied first. When the fiber was etched within 10 microns diameter to its core, light leakage was obviously observed. Once the electric field added on pre- aligned liquid crystal which was cladded on an etched fiber was switched on, the polarizationselection and intensity modulation of the fiber's throughput power were exhibited. A theoretical description of the optical characteristics of the present samples was also given.
