Normal elderly subjects had slower walking speed at about 93.8 cm/sec, decreased stride length, step length, single support phase, increased stance phase and double support phase. Normal elderly also performed more deviation over posterior pelvic tilt, internal hip rotation, external foot rotation and knee varus during swing phase. Stroke patients revealed slow walking speed (41.9 cm/ sec), increased stance period and decreased swing period in unaffected limb. Gait symmetry was compromised in stance symmetry, swing symmetry and stance to swing ratio symmetry, which showed significant speed relationship. The temporal- spatial variables could not be discriminated between motor recovery stage 3 & stage 4, and between stage 5 & stage 6, but improved from stages 3 & 4 to stages 5 & 6. However, these variables could be clearly discriminated among three groups of walking velocity (slow, medium and fast speed group) Difference in ROM was shown to be correlated with groups of different velocities rather than stages of motor recovery. With the above finding, we were convinced that temporal-spatial and kinematic variables were better characterized by gait speed rather than by motor recovery stage.
