The Geographic Information System(GIS) is applied to solve the metropolitan refuse collection routing system and successfully integrates data base, model base and user graphical interface. Therefore, by using this computer aided system, decision makers can easily arranges the optimal refuse collection routing and the crew assignment schedule. Several conclusions can be made as below: 1.The algorithms of Vehicle Routing Problem(VRP) have been successfully applied and achieved abundant constructive decisions for solid waste collection system. 2.The planning process of waste collection system exhibits strong geographical characters. Therefore, how to integrate both economic and environmental factors is the most important focus in system analysis. GIS is the powerful tool for supporting this goal.
