Currently, compound documents are almost everywhere and play important roles in many applications. In many clinical applications, physicians often need a well-designed document management system to help them to manage their medical images.In this thesis, we adopt the concept of document management system to build a system that allows the users to perceive that they are facing a document-centric integrated environment. In the architecture of this system, we apply document-view model to separate user interfaces and computation. We also use object- oriented technology to implement this system.For the medical data, we design a "medical image folder" to contain them. We can easily extend the document types and the processing functions. In the folder, the image windows provide user friendly interfaces for physicians to manipulate medical images. Considering the performance and the distributed environment, we develop a "user level file cache" mechanism to increase the performance of this system. We also support the functions for users to build different databases for different cases, so that the images can be easily managed.
