The lowest level of this automation hierarchy is the field level which includes field devices,such as sensors and actuators. Field bus is used for information transfer among these field devices. It requires several generic features, the real-time capability is of the primary importance. After studying the real-time feature of field bus, we apply a reduced stacks of OSI network model to design a field bus protocol. By use of this model, we plan a real-time network system and decide its scheduling schemes and task priorities. In particular, we utilize a real-time kernel as the development platform, and implement IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN protocol on it. This thesis gives an introduction of real-time multitasking system at first. Consecutively, the field bus network architecture and its real-time traffic characteristics are discussed.
