Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop empirically-based
classification patterns and distribution characteristics for
the selected financial ratios and to measure the long-term
stability of these patterns and the financial ratios.
Using data for the thirty-nine commercial banks in Taiwan
during the period 1986-1993, forty financial ratios are
selected for our empirical work. While we used factor analysis
to analyze patterns of finance ratios, Kruskal-Wallis test were
used for stability analyses. In addition we apply Polynominals
theory to find out the actual distributions of financial ratios.
The results shows that the empirically-based classifications
are consistent with CAMEL rating process. Five factors were
developed. Either these patterns or ratios are relatively
stable over the empirical period. Most of ratios are not
normal distribution which is consistent with priori studies
that the ratios of commercial banks are not generally normally
distributed. The five major ratios are J-shaped or skewed.
The distribution characteristics has important interpretation
of financial ratios, as well as implications for monitoring of
bank''s financial condition by regulatory agencies.
