It is derived from the following plants of the Solanaceae family: (a) Lycium chinense MILL. (b) L. barbarum L.[=L. halimifolium MILL.]. The plant is a good treatment for trouble withlung, blood, bones, and kidney. The root, aerial part, and fruit areused as a remedy to chronic illnesses, increase the vision, invigorating for liver and kidney. And further, the plant was also be used as antirheumatic, diuretic, antisenile agent and antipyretic for hepatitis. However, the mechanism is obscure. In recent years, it has been reported that free radicals intermediates such as .O2- (superoxide anion radical), .OH (hydroxyl radical), H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) and 1O2 ( singalet oxygen) are notonly one of important class of cellular injuries but also can initiate peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in biological membranes. Thelipid peroxidation can lead to diverse pathological conditions,including various liver disorders, atherosclerosis, rheumatic diseases,irradiation and aging by injuring the liver, kidney and other organs. In the other hand, the superoxide scavenger such as superoxide dismutase(SOD) and vitamin E are capable of alleviating free radical damage. Based on these findings, some of the pharmacological mechanism of this plant may be come form it''s SOD-like activity or eliminates the production of excess active oxygen and lipid peroxide. In this study, it was interested to evaluated the relationship between pharmacological and antioxidant effect of this plant. The carrageenan induced rat paw edema and CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity inrats were used to study the anti- inflammatory and liver protective effects of L. chinense. The histological changes of rat hepatic tissues were also investigated. Furthermore, the antioxidant effect of the crude drug extract are evaluated by two experiments: FeCl2-Ascorbic acid induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver homogenate and active oxygen scavenging activity by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry using 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO) as a spin trap. The extracts of L. chinense show anti- inflammatory activity against carragenan induced rats paw edema and CCl4-induced liver injury. Results also exhibited anti- oxidant effects in FeCl2-ascorbate induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver homogenate. Moreover, the free radical scavenger effect of L. chinense was demonstrated using electron spin resonance and spin-trapping technique.
