The library, being theknowledge navigator, has had a lot of experience and theorybackground on the organization of the information. However,"physical description" is emphasized more and the "subjectanalysis" less. For the digital information,which does nothave physical appearance, the subject retrieval is becomingmore and more important. In this research, we use literaturereview to analyze the problems, methods and the futuretrends about the traditional library subject retrieval andnetwork information. We then conclude with a checklist aboutthe subject-oriented search engine.With this checklist, wesurvey those main subject-oriented search engines onInternet. We finally offer some principles for designing agood network subject-oriented search engine. We expect thatthese principles will provide for better network resourcessubject-oriented retrieval services. Based on the research,we suggested that following five respects to improve thesubject-oriented search engine： the network informationscope、retrieval language、the system control function、 theoutput results and the userinterface.
