Summary:碩士 === 淡江大學 === 中國文學系研究所 === 83 === Tsai-gen-tan is an essential book about human self-cultivation. Besides putting emphasis upon the cultivation of the mind, it stress in particular how to be wordly wise and play safe and also the secret of getting along with others. The shinking in it is the combined product of the three schools of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and contains overtones of practical tilitarianism. These features have their special background in regard to their age and the author''s intention. This thesis inspects the ackgroudn from which these featrues develop and places Tsai- gen-tan''s value within the traditional Chinese cultural system. It is divided into six chapters. Chapter One as the introduction focuses on the research value of Tsai- gen-tan and the method of research. Chapter Two deals with the social value in Tsai-gen-tan and tries to indicate its point of view of view of society and how to conrfont the social valut that is produced, in order to be the base of the fellowing chapters. Chapter Three relies upon the concept that literature is a reflection of society and puts Tsai-gen-tan in the mighty social torrent of late-Ming; it actively seeks to understand the interaction of the social thought in the book and the social structure at that time that is the work reflects the background of that period and the social phenmenon at that time. The main purpose is to clarity the social pulse of the thought in the book. Chapter Four echoes the social phenomenon of the social pulse, looks for the autor''s intention, and tries to find the theoritical organization and transition traces in the social values which the author brings up. Chapter Five under the consideration of consumption expains the meaning behind utilitarianism. It asks questions such as what is the social psychology at that time? How is Tsai - gen - tan aceepted by readers? How is it popular what is the readers'' construct? what is the social mentality which they take? Do the publishers publish this book for commerical considerations only? How does it spread? And the main focus: is this work a product of a product of a consumer cultrure? Chapter Six as the conclusion probes into why this book has been endowed with the social function of civilizing even up to the present? And What is the reason for and value of its popularity? In this way, I hope to explicate the cultural value of Tsai-gen-tan.
