This study aims at a better understanding of the determinants of the market shares of SMEs in Taiwan''s manufacturing sector in 1991. After considering the recent changes in the industrial environment, we also compare our findings with previous studies. We hope to have a better understanding of the adaptability of SMEs and their prospects. Based on the industrial and commercial censuses data of the Taiwan-Fukin district of the Republic of China in 1991, this study explores the determinants of the market shares of SMEs, measured in enterprises with less than one hundred employees, in Taiwan''s manufacturing sector. We begin with a regression analysis, based on the following independent variables : the relative efficiency of SMEs, the variables of entry barriers, the entices of industrial entry and the external industrial environment. The resul t of the empirical work shows that as in the past, the market shares of SMEs in Taiwan''s manufacturing sector are influenced mainly by the relative labor productivity and represents entry barriers. When the labor payment was in accord with the labor quality, SMEs share increased. A greater percentage of the profit of an industry will cause the entice. As SMEs are concerned, the younger industries and a better sub- contracting system are conducive external environment. Contrary to the findings of previous study, we find that industries with a higher percentage of export reduce the market shares of SMEs. In addition, the investment on the automatic equipments of SMEs raises the labor productivity, which contributes to the market shares. The investment on the environmental protection has negative effect on the survival of SMEs. Ming-Wen Hu 胡名雯 1995 學位論文 ; thesis 79 zh-TW
