The various traffic types will coexist because ATM networks support a wide range of services. The heavy traffic will result in service degradation for multimedia applications. To solve the problem, an appropriate scheduling policy is required in the ATM multiplexer to guarantee the quality of service (QoS) for each traffic type. The arrival traffic from subscribers to the ATM network are classified into two types: real-time traffic and non-real-time traffic. The real-time data has constraint on the time delay and the non-real-time data is not sensitive to time delay but rather sensitive to loss probability. Considering quality of service for each traffic, the scheduling policy with two thresholds in ATM multiplexer is proposed and studied in this thesis. In order to describe the bursty traffic characteristics of ATM environment, Markov Modulated Poisson Processes (MMPP) are used as arrival processes. The MPEG (Moving Pictures Expert Group) have developed an international video coding standard and have been applied to a wide range of video entertainment. Therefore, several MPEG video sources are regarded as real-time data and we use MMPP process to model these MPEG video sources.
