The municipal and industrial wastewater discharged via marine outfalls may contain some organic pollutants and heavy metals. Many of these contaminants are insoluble in water and are found to readily associate with suspended particulate matters. This study reports the resultant contmination of the bottom sediments of the three outfall regions by total organic carbon, organic pollutants and five heavy metals. The sediment samples were collected with Smith McIntyre grab at outfall areas. The particle sizes of sediments were gradually decreased over depth at Tso-Ying and Da-Lin-Pu outfalls, but the correllations between particle size and depth were not significant. High valves of total organic carbon occured in Jong-Jou outfall area, as a result off discharge of domestic wastewater. All the study areas were affected by industrial wastewater. Most of the organic pollutants observed displayed seasonal changes. In Jong-Jou outfall area, copper, zinc and lead were higher than those in Tso-Ying and Da-Lin-Pu outfall areas. In Comparison with the reported contents of heavy metals in sediments were accomplished at Taiwan coastal area, the acumulation of heavy metals in sediments was not observed except zinc. The equilibrium constants for the exchangeable heavy metals between sediments and sea water. The value of Ksw are zinc (217-275),lead(40-53),cadmium(47-48),copper (33-37).
