CSC and Japanese steel firms are compared. Al- though the ownership structure and product life cycle are quite different between CSC and Jnpanese steel firms, their growth trajectories are similar. Besides continuing to maintain steel business'''' growth and competitive advantages, they all engaages in diversification strategy for continuing growth. Their stra- tegy can be classified into three stages:(1)developing business that are related to steel-making process and core business, (2) developing business that are related to steel-making technology , (3)developing business that are attractive but steel- unrelated . Their long term goals are to increase the proportion of reve- nue from diversified business. This growth modes is consistent Kolter''''s model, which also identified three growth stages: (1) intensive growth opportunity, (2)integrated growth opportunity, (3)diversification growth opportunity.
