The foundation stability analysis was carried out by using a two dimensional, nonlinear, elastic-plastic finite element computer program. For such complex problem and considering of limited time span, the scope of the study was limited to the stability analysis of a 3-ft wide foundation with a 3-ft embedment which located near a underground circular void. The considering foundation soils included a commercial kaolinite clay and a silty clay. A wide range of void conditions were investigated which included three different void sizes, three different void eccentricities, and many different void depths. A total of 115 conditions were investigated. The results of the investigated indicated that the presence of a nearby undergound void would affect the stability of a shallow embedded foundation. The ultimated bearing capacity of such foundation would increase as the distance between the foundation and the increases. The results of the analysis also indicated that there is a critical depth to void (measure from the base of the foundation) beyond which the presence of such voids has essentially no effect on the performance of the foundation. By connecting void eccentricities versus the associated critical depths, the critical extent of each condition can be easily established. For a given foundation with and foundation embedment, the critical extent is a function of void size and foundation soil strength parameters. Based on the results of the study, the critical extent would increase as the void size increases, and decrease as the soil strength parameter(s) increases.
