Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中央大學 === 土木工程研究所 === 83 === This study investigated the effects of particle arrangement, contact and packing characteristics on the behavior of granular soils, at a microscopic scale, using a digital image analyzer. Granuar materials with different shapes were prepared in the alboratory at various levels of relative densities by dry tamping and pluviation procudures. The spectemns were then impreganted with epoxy resin such that the structure of the specimens can be preserved after hardening of the resin. The hard-ened specimens were later thin-sectioned and placed under a light microscope to obtain images of the fabric. In order to examine the anisotropic behavior of granular soils, thin sections from various locations and orientations were obtained.
The results show that:(1) particle orientation of granular materials can be affected by particle shape, method of preparation, and inclination of sampling section; (2) the relationship between the stress state during specimen preparation and the resulting fabric characterstics can be interpreted by the stress chain theory; (3) predicting the volumetric porosity of granular soils based on areal porosity can be erroneous without considering factors such as particle shape, packing density, and particle orientation; (4) sphericity and elongation ratio of particle has great effect on the anisotropy and void distribution.
