One hundred and thirty-five freshman at National Taiwan Institute of Technology participated in this study. They were given a simulated TOEFL test and a conjunction test. The results show that (1) college- level Chinese students are more competent in using intra- sentential conjunctions than intersentential conjunctions, (2) content familiarity seems not quite significant in helping students to better understand the texts and thus using conjunctions more accurately, and (3) subjects with higher level of English proficiency exhibited greater ability in using conjunctions, both intrasententially and intersententially.
