Questionnaires designed to evaluate the school staffs'' will emphasizing, and the proceeding on the oral hygiene programs were answered by principals, deans of pupils'' affair, chiefs of physical education and hygiene departments and nurses in 75 public elementary schools of Kaohsiung city. Two of the most, and the least cooperative schools were selected. The fifth grade teachers of those four schools were asked to answer the questionnaire. Pupils of the two classes from the teachers had the strongest and the weakest participating willingness were selected for further investigation. Pupils were asked to answer questionnaires, receive oral examination, tooth brushing instruction every other two weeks, for a total of three times. The results are as follows: 1. At present, the promotion of oral hygiene in elementary schools proceeded mostly by school themselves. The cooperation''s of superior offices, society and family are not good. 2. So far oral hygiene activities held in schools are mostly of oral examination. Audio-visual teaching is suggested. 3. Before active oral hygiene instruction, there is no significant difference in plaque scores among groups. However, DMFT index is influenced by school administrators. 4. The dentist''s oral hygiene education intervention indeed improved the schoolchildren''s plaque scores significantly. 5. The cooperation of school and teacher has positive influence on keeping schoolchildren''s good oral hygiene habits. Furthermore, the influence from school is more than from teacher. 6. School children''s knowledge of oral hygiene is influenced by school administrators and teachers while teacher''s attitude of oral hygiene is influenced by school administrators.
