Description
Summary:碩士 === 中國醫藥學院 === 中國醫學研究所 === 83 === Graves' disease is the most commonly observed from of hyperthyroidism, a well-recorded syndrome caused by excessive free circulating thyroid hormones. The complexity of signs (symptoms) and hign rate of recurrence create numerous difficulties. It this study, the effectiveness of treatment combining the advantages of Chinese medicine based on traditional Chinese diagnosis with Western medical therapy was compared with simple Western medical treatment. The study divided subjects into two groups, a study group given Chinese combined with Western medical medication, and a control group give only Western medical therapy (Methimazole). Thyroid function and TSH receptor Ab (TRAb) were regularly assessed. The study study group subjects were outpatients who visited the Thyroid Unit of the Department of Internal Chinese Medicine of China Medical Hospital between July 1993 and March 1994. The subjects of the control group were outpatients visiting the corresponding unit of the Department of Internal Western Medicine over the same period. The subject group comprised 31 patients, 15 of whom were classified as "depressed liver transforming into fire" (gan yu hua huo) and treated with Dan Zhi Xiao YaoSan (Moutan and Gardenia Free Wanderer Decoction), and 16 of whom were classified as "dual vacuity of qi and yin" (qi yin liang xu) and treated with Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Celestial Emperor Heart-Supplementing Elixir). Each patient was given three month courses of treatment. After the treatment, the TRAb of the studyy group compared with that of the control group showed more obvious reduction, and the statistical difference (p<0.05) existed. Therefore, the results showed that the Chinese medical treatment combined with Western medical treated was more effective than simple Western medical treatment in reducing TRAb
