In the thesis, two ATM VP- based self-healing ring architectures are studied. One is the end-to-end model, the other is proposed by NTT laboratory, which we call the NTT model. We propose three reconnection schemes that bring the network back to normal operation after network failures are cleared. Proposal 1 uses the request/ confirm messages to execute the reconnection procedures. Proposal 2 is designed based on the time difference of the indication signal and the buffer size in the switch node. Proposal 3 adds the resource management function which informs the source to decrease the cell sending rate in the reconnecting interval. Comparisons are made for the three reconnection proposals.
