A hierarchical process planning framework, which emphasizes and generates information of intermediate workpiece shapes and specifications, is proposed. Based on this hierarchical structure, a feature-based process planning system is developed, associated with a generic expert system. The designated generic expert system significantly reduces constraints of usiing commercial expert system package for process planning. The databases and rule bases of the developed generic expert system are thoughtfully designated to provide a friendly and flexible construction environment for the user. Following simple guiides to build knowledge bases of different engineering. the system can support other concurrent engineering system to carry out tasks of heuristic reasoning for related engineering processes.
