Description
Summary:碩士 === 淡江大學 === 西洋語文研究所 === 82 === This thesis sets out as a study of the female heroism in Sean O' Casey's two plays Juno and the Paycock and The Plough and the Stars. It is an attemp to reveal O'Casey's representation of the affliction of war by women's unique heroic sacrifice. In the two plays, O'Casey presents his female charaters' superb ability in dealing with the task of life. Such insights make O' Casey's plays different from the traditional masculine dominant plays. The chaotic state of Ireland and a review on O'Casey's plays are briefly introduced in the First Chapter. In the Second Chapter, it gives a brief comparison of O'Casey's female heroism with other playwrights' heroic plays, such as Marlowe' s, Shakespeare's, and Dryden's, and then it is followed by a discussion of Juno as a heroine in Juno and the Paycock. Chapter Three shows that how Nora and Bessie achieve their heroic statures in The Plough and the Stars. The Last Chapter ends with a revaluation of the importance of O'Casey's plays in modern time.
