The fan-shaped free body for stress analysis consists of two lines and part of a logarithmic spiral. Rankine''s state of stress is utilized in the analysis. The calculated bearing capacity factors Nc,Nq,Nr are tabulated for quick reference. Result shows that the bearing capacity factors for vertical concentric loads are comparable with respective factors from literature when a rough base is assumed. When a shallow foundation is subjected to a eccentric load, the calcutated bearing capacity compare favorably with Meyerhof''s and Saran and Prakash''s test results , but larger differences are observed when compared with Purkayastha and Char''s test result.
