Calixarenes, which are the cavity-containing condensation products from p-substitued phenols and formaldehyde, are able to form the "host-guest complex" with an organic molecule or metal ion. Those host-guest complex formation are being proposed in the area of enzyme mimic studies.
When calix[4]arene, allyl bromide, and K2CO3 were refluxed in acetonitrile for 4 hours, 1,3-diallyloxy-calix[4]arene was afforded as a colorless crystal in over 60% yield. The allyloxy moieties were then transferred to para-position by heat-induced Claisen rearrangement and gave 1,3-diallylcalix[4]arene in quantitative yield.
The diazonium coupling reaction between 1,3-diallyl-calix[4]arene and various p-sutstituted benzodiazonium salts yielded the corresponding diarylaro and/or monoarylazo products in different reaction conditions. The preparation, isolation, and characterization of these calix[4]arenes with two different kinds of para-substituent are discussed.
