The power circuit of each type of the proposed BESSs is simple, since it consists of only one bilateral switching- mode converter. Through the sophisticated cascade control techniques developed in this dissertation, the bidirectional power flow of the converter is very easy to regulate, and hence each of the proposed BESSs possesses the combined functions of power conditioner, active power filter and uninterruptible power supply (UPS). When the utility is in normal condition, the proposed BESS is connected to its grid through a synchronization process. Then according to the daily load condition, the BESS is programmed to operate in discharging, charging or floating mode. In addition to these power condtioning functions, the proposed BESS is also controlled to function as an active power filter to compensate the load unbalanced and harmonic currents as well as the reactive power in all these modes. As the utility power failure happens, the BESS is operated in inverter mode for suppling uninterruptible power with sinusoidal voltage waveforms to the load. Finally, the multi-module parallel operation of the proposed BESSs is also investigated. A central power distribution control technique is proposed to let the current sharing of each parallel BESS be programmable according to its capacity.
