The experiments showed that Ca/TMA- and DDTMA/HDTMA -smectite had evident seperatory intendency ,and the other four modified clays demostrated the random distribution in the interlayer of clays when changing surface properties with organic cations. Different kinds of organic cations have different effectin improving the adsorption capacity of clay.When clay was modified by TMA , the major mechanism of remove organic compounds is adsorption . Adsorption capacity will increase with increasing surface area of clay.The adsorption of organic compounds by the modified clays system appears to be dependent on the molecure structure of organic pollutant.the TMA is especially adapted for aromatic compounds with small molecure weigth. When clay treated with the DDTMA and HDTMA ,the mechanism for removing organic compounds is partitioning . Adsorption capacity is strongly related to the carbon content in organic cations and quantity of organic carbons in clay .
