And we have the following main results: 1.We propose a design procedure for a class of uncertain/ nonlinear model-following systems using the theory of VSCS. Different from previous researches, though the order of the proposed model is allowed to be unequal to that of the plant, the variable structure controller still makes the plant outputs track the model outputs. 2.A new robust stability condition of the sliding mode is presented. According to the result, we successfully applied the concept of VSCS to the decentralized stabilisation problems of uncertain large scale time- delay systems with unmatched uncertainties. 3.The asymptotic stabilization problem for a class of time-delay systems with unknown but bounded uncertainties is considered. An improved adaptive variable structure controller is presented to guarantee that the controlled system is asymptotically stable and the chattering phenomena around the sliding surface are also reduced.
