碩士 === 國立交通大學 === 資訊科學學系 === 82 === In the near future, the interconnection of LANs/MANs will be one of the most important applications in the ATM-based B-ISDN. LANs/MANs at present predominantly use connectionless protocols, while ATM offers connection-oriented communication. The connectionless data service on B-ISDN can be realized directly by means of the connectionless servers in which connectionless data service functions are provided. In this thesis, we focus on the optimization of virtual topology for the interconnection of LANs/MANs with a wide area public ATM network. Two algorithms based on the greedy and branch-and- bound methods, are presented to determine the locations of connectionless servers. By finding the optimal locations of connectionless server, an optimal virtual topology, which has the minimized total transport costs for the connectionless data traffics, is constructed.
