to analyze the solid-liquid phase moving front position in the
inverse phase change problem. As we know that, when the heat
conduction problem involves melting or solidification ,it is
classified as the " phase change " or " moving boundary "
problem , such as ice making , refrigeration and metal casting
, etc. Generally speaking , the temperature distribution of the
phase change problem depends on the initial and boundary
conditions , thermal pro- perties of the material , solid-
liquid front position , etc. Therefor it becomes very
complicated. In this study , the technique of INVERSE HEAT
CONDUCTION PROBLEM OR (IHCP) is used to estimated and control
the moving front position by utilizing the spatial and temporal
temperature measurements , besides , the statistical analysis
is also performed to obtain the expression for the 99%
confidence bounds of the estimated quantities. Three different
categories of inverse phase change problem are investigated in
this report ,they include(1) the estimation of best measured
position in determining the thermal properties and moving front
velocity ,(2) the prediction of mold-casting interface
condition and the moving front position and (3) the control of
boundary condition to yield a desired moving front velocity.
