Aniline was poly merized on the Nafion-117 membrane by two oxidants,(NH4)2S2O8 and FeCl3.(NH4)2S2O8 shows stronger abiility for the oxidation of aniline than FeCl3 and therefore takes less time, for polymeriz -ation. The PAN(polyaniline)/Nafion membrane could thus be prepar -ed as na electrode material for SO2 detection. The steady state detection current with respect to SO2 concentr -ation can be expressed as: i(steady)=2FADfkdK{1-exp(-(k/Df)1/2 }Cso2 The SO2 electrode so made is aimed to the detection of trace SO2 concentration at the leave of ppm. It is expected to be applied to the detection of hte SO2 content in the waste gas from tactor ies. The SO2 electrode made from PAN/Nafion membrane shows a linear relationship for SO2 concentration and response current in the range from 20 to 250 ppm. The surface characteristics of this membrane, including morphology and crystallinity, have been studied by SEM and XRD. The response of this SO2 electrode can often be improved by chemical teratment and cyclic voltametry.
