Maternal Influence on the Oral Health Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of the Fifth Grade Students in the Elementary Schools

碩士 === 高雄醫學大學 === 口腔衛生科學研究所 === 82 === The purposes of this study were to understand the factors affecting the oral health knowledge, attitudes and practices of the fifth grade students in the elementary schools. This research focused on the mothers'' oral health knowledge, attitudes and practices and tried to find the association between mothers and their children about the oral health knowledge, attitudes and practices. We choose 10 elementary schools in Kaohsiung city by random sampling method, then randomly select 3 fifth grade classes from each selected school using the cluster sampling method. There were 1284 students and their mothers in this study. Questionnaire surveys were the methods we used to collect the data. The findings were as follows: There was significant positive correlation between students'' and mothers'' oral health knowledge and attitudes. The statistic test revealed the significant difference in the scores of students'' oral health knowledge and attitudes between schools. The scores of students'' oral health knowledge and attitudes were higher in high SES family than low SES family. There was significant negative correlation between students'' oral health knowledge and attitudes and family members and child numbers. We found strongly association between students'' and mothers'' oral health practices, for example, toothbrushing frequency, toothbrushing methods, toothbrush placement and using dental floss. All of those were statistical significance.
