Description
Summary:碩士 === 淡江大學 === 西洋語文研究所 === 81 === In The Magus, Nicholas, the protagonist and the main narrator, owing to his personal problems, with his self, family, and society, has been trapped in the abyss of alienation. That is, he is the personification of alienation, while Conchis, the Magus (the magician) who has schemed the godgame (a series of events that contain Conchis's views of reality) for Nicholas, is the personification of reality. Conchis, though giving Nicholas a hard time by taking advantage of his spiritual void, inducts Nicholas step by step to start a quest for self by initiating him into the exploration of the meaning of human existence through delicately presenting him some sophisticated visions of reality. Conchis's views of reality are primarily presented in the four narratives of his life-story that he narrates to Nicholas during the godgame (Neuve Chapelle, de Deukans, Seidevarre, and Wimmel).
