Not only had she undergone three periods of Meiji, Tacheng, and Chaoho, along with the growth and modernization of the national system of Japan, her thought also reflects the spirit of her time. In addition, Raicho Hilashuka's accomplishment in constructing the thought of the liberation of women and her devotion to being a pioneer in the civil movement of women make her the founder coneerning female issue on the Japanese "Motherliness" and the conception of "Motherhood." In general, Raicho Hilashuka's life during the process of erecting the thought of the liberation of women could be divi- ded into three periods roughly according to the chronicle order, first, the Meiji period, second, the Tacheng period, and third, the Chaoho period. In this thesis, I understake first of all research centered on three stages of Raicho Hilashuka's construction of the thought of the liberation of women during the Tacheng period(1910s --1920s). By means of my research, the traits Raicho Hilashuka left during the formation of the Japanese civil movement of women could be laid bare. Likewise, it is in this sense that there will be a better understanding of the importance of Raicho Hilashuka's thought of the liber- ration of women in the history of thoughts in Japan. Secondly, I endeavour to dub in one chapter the feminist critism before the publication of "Blue Stocking" while distributing another chapter to the study of the female criticism after the foundation of the "New Women Association" to maintain the integrity and consistency of my research. Above all, my aim in this thesis is not to give the last word to a modern feminist reading. Instead, my task is to demonstrate the speciality of Raicho Hilashuka's existence during Meiji and Chaoho -- two periods heavily colored with a strong sense of nationalism.
