碩士 === 淡江大學 === 中國文學研究所 === 81 === The study of Chieh Hsi Shih are in four parts. Part One focuses on his life story and his social life that, in turn, shed a light of what he was. Roughly speaking, his circle of friends and acquaintances in his social life are divided into four categories: 1) those who had helped him; 2) those who had had a deep-rooted friendship with him; 3) those whose friendship status is pending further investigation; and 4) those were from either the Buddhist or the Taoist sect. Part Two deals with the political environment in the Yuan Dynasty and his political point of view. In the history of China, the political environment in the Yuan Dynasty was com- paratively quite different, setting off a rather immense impact upon the then scholars. To Chieh Hsi Shih, the close- ly associated issues were of the political standing of the scholars and the problem of the scholars whether to serve in the government or to go into seclusion. In the political arena, Chieh Hsi Shih had strongly advocated recommendation of the qualified for government service. In addition, his vision of governing was a clean government where corruption was totally eradicated. Part Three expounds on the study of Chieh''''s ideology as reflected respectively in Confucianism, pedagogy, and his- tory. It has been found that Confucianism was the center of his ideology. Confucianism had in fact exerted quite an influence of what he did, be it in politics, history, peda- gogy, or literature.
