The magnetic fixture is used in supplement of the regular fixture to provide a uniformly distributed holding force for ine machining. In order to firmly hold the work piece and to prevent deformation due to the holding force, the design emphasis is on both how to produce maximum holding force das well as to produce a uniformly distributed force. Due to the many varieties of design options plus the difficulty in calculating the magnetic holding force, it is very difficult to generate a design package that will optimize the design. In our research, the magnetic holding force(both tensile and shear force) are modeled by using the ANSYS magnetic tool kit. A simulated annealing process is then performed to search for the optimal configuration. The criteria for maximum holding force and for the most uniformly distributed force can both be implemented. The users provide the initial configuration for the fixture and the magnets. Our design package will then proceed to search for the optimal configuration. The optimal number of magnets can also be included for limited values.
