The surface of SMC may be flat or curved. Under good forming conditions, the smoothness of the surface can be properly controlled. A precision system to inspect the surface smoothness is also needed. The conventional method using profilemeter may very often scratch the surface of SMC. Besides, its speed is too slow to use. This thesis develops a non-contact measuring system for surface smoothness. By the use of a dual-axis scanner, a laser line can be projected onto the test piece, and scanned across the surface. A CCD camera is then employed to capture the image of the reflected line on a screen. The distortion of projected image can be related to the surface smoothness based on proposed mathematical model.
